Use gain carefully

Raising volume cannot restore detail that was never captured, and very large boosts may make background noise more obvious. If the original file is already clipped, lowering gain will reduce level but will not repair distortion.

Step-by-step volume workflow

Load your file into Change Volume. Start with a small boost such as +3 dB or +6 dB, then preview. Check the loudest moments, not only the beginning. If the tool warns about headroom, lower the boost or enable peak normalize on export.

Optional fades can soften the start and end after a level change, which is useful when a boosted clip will sit next to quieter audio in a video timeline.

When volume is the wrong first move
